No Mobile TV Progress for Beeb

(29 Jul 2008, BWCS Staff)

Despite trialing mobile TV services for over a year, the BBC in the UK has yet to make its mind up over whether it will offer a fully-blown service. The BBC Trust is said to be looking into plans to expand its trial offering. The corporation's mobile service has been available through the 3G services of Orange, T Mobile, Vodafone, and 3. However, rivals have moaned that as the BBC is giving away its service, the competition is suffering unfairly

While Korea and Japan lead the way in the nascent market for mobile TV services, a recent survey in Germany found that over 5.6 million mobile users had at least sampled the tiny pictures available on their handsets.

In May of this year, US telco AT&T and MediaFlo, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, announced the launch of a new mobile TV service. The new service features live TV programmes and two exclusive channels. It also offers full-length TV content and coverage of sports events. The programming comes from CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, Fox Mobile, MTV, and Nickelodeon.

AT&T is trying to corner itself a healthy share of the mobile TV market, which it expects to grow quickly over the next five years. Sony Pictures Television also said that it plans to bring the big screen to subscribers of AT&T Mobile TV with the launch of the PIX channel. PIX gives customers access to movies from Columbia Pictures, Tri-Star, ScreenGems and Sony Pictures Classics on their mobile phone.
